"We are marking a truly sad milestone: that of the repression in Syria, which has now exceeded the symbolic figure of 10 000 dead. I am shocked by the extreme violence that we are seeing there, but also particularly disturbed by the turn that events have taken. We should welcome the fact that the United Nations is finally addressing the issue. Kofi Annan’s plan seems to me a reasonable road map, offering hope of an end to the crisis. However, it appears that Bashar al-Assad is only using it to buy time. The ceasefire to which he had committed lasted only a few hours before he started shelling several cities again. Yet we must acknowledge the important resolution voted for unanimously by the United Nations Security Council, which enabled military observers to be sent into Syria. Their task is proving difficult while there is a lack of initial political will in place to bring an end to the crisis. However, it is now the only hope for the gradual implementation of Kofi Annan’s plan. I would take this opportunity to welcome the European diplomatic action that has managed to persuade Russia and China not to use their veto again in the UN."@en1
