"Mr President, the repercussions of the military coup in Mali were still being felt when we were faced with another in Guinea-Bissau. Two in the West African region in the space of two weeks should be enough for the EU to recognise the fundamental role it has to play, together with the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the UN and the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), to stabilise the region and, above all, to protect the people who need democracy and the rule of law and security in order to survive and thrive. Europe’s security is also in the balance there. Human-, arms- and drug-trafficking routes pass through the region, leading right to Europe. That is why we must act, and we have the tools to act, and help the people of these countries react and re-emerge. We need to combine. Political declarations of condemnation are not enough. We must combine them with dedicated diplomacy and the muscle of the Common Security and Defence Policy, as well as humanitarian aid.
