"Madam President, it is at least a year ago that in this same Chamber, we discussed the situation regarding the city of Kashgar in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. At that time, the Commissioner representing the European External Action Service said that the EU would do all it could for the good of this region and its people.
It is important that the EU keeps its promises and, furthermore, that the Commission’s work is monitored. I would therefore now ask what Baroness Ashton has done to ensure that the city of Kashgar is made a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and how the human rights of the people in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region have been promoted by the EU in recent times. Or was the situation in Kashgar simply a case of empty words?"@en1
