"Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, the report is an annual assessment of how far EU policies are aimed at the promotion of human rights worldwide. I am particularly in favour of an approach that is critical but, at the same time, constructive, regarding the strengthening of policies for the promotion of the human rights of women, who all too often represent a minority that is weak and lacking guarantees, even though, in many rural areas of the world, women are the heart of the economy and are the main source of income for the family.
The European Union must strengthen cooperation with those international organisations that deal with this issue, through a targeted funding policy, such as that of the United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence against Women.
Any form of discrimination and violence against women cannot be tolerated or be justified on religious, political or cultural grounds. While the High Representative is in plenary, I would like to take the opportunity to call upon her in the strongest of terms to do something for the two Italian sailors."@en1
