"Ladies and gentlemen, it is my great pleasure to be able to welcome 12 Croatian observers to their first part-session of the European Parliament today. Ladies and gentlemen from Croatia, today, you are taking your seats in the Chamber for the first time. From today onwards, you will be participating in the meetings of parliamentary committees and of political groups, where you will have the opportunity to contribute to the debates. This will ensure that you are well prepared to support your country during its forthcoming accession to the European Union. You will be preparing yourselves to represent the interests of a full Member State of the European Union and of the citizens of your country here in the European Parliament. As you all know, the European Parliament has already ratified the Treaty of Accession. We hope that, on 1 July 2013, Croatia will become the 28th Member State of the European Union. This will be an historic day for Croatia. I believe it will also be an historic day for the European Union and for the Western Balkans as a whole. The fact that new colleagues from a country which is joining the EU are working with us here, first as observers and then later as full members, sends out a signal that the European Union as a concept for the cooperation of states and peoples across national borders has not lost any of its fascination, despite the crisis which we are discussing on a daily basis and which we will have to debate once again here today. There are still many countries which envy us our integration process. There are also peoples who want to join this community of nations. We should not see this as a burden, but as a great opportunity and as an affirmation of the concept of European integration. Therefore, I think it is an encouraging sign that in this situation, in which we are all thinking so often about the purpose of our European integration efforts, other nations want to join us. All of this is expressed symbolically by the presence of the new observers from Croatia. Once again, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to you."@en1
