"Although citizens’ rights are clearly enshrined in the EU’s legal acts, they are not always upheld in practice. Therefore, many people feel disenchanted with the European project. The Committee on Petitions (PETI) attempts to rectify these shortcomings by placing citizens at the heart of its activities. Turning its political influence to good account, it enters into direct dialogue with national or regional authorities in the Member States concerned and tries to find quick, non-judicial remedies to the issues raised with it. In instances bringing forward allegations of serious infringements of EU law, which merit further consideration by the Court of Justice of the European Union, the PETI Committee closely cooperates with the Commission for the initiation of infringement proceedings. Consequently, citizens’ rights are constantly promoted and secured through the petitions process."@en1
