"We Swedish Conservatives and Christian Democrats in the European Parliament voted today in favour of an own-initiative report on a corporate governance framework for European companies, as the report clearly states that the EU’s role in these matters is to be limited and that current practice in the Member States, such as that represented by the Swedish Corporate Governance Code, is to continue. It also clearly establishes that it is the shareholders who are responsible for appointing board members and specifies the way in which this is to be done. These are important principles for us. The report also contains a passage in which the Commission is called on to come up with legislative proposals on the setting of quotas for the representation of women on corporate boards. We remain opposed to any such requirements, as we believe that it is wrong to reduce people to representatives of any particular group, whether that is a particular gender, ethnicity, age or something else, instead of looking at their individual characteristics and qualities."@en1
