"I voted in favour of the motion for a resolution on the progress achieved by Turkey, especially in underlining the critical issues that are still unresolved. As mentioned in paragraph 11, it is of primary importance that Turkey should have a modern and efficient, fully independent and impartial judicial system, guaranteeing due process of law for all citizens. The growing number of new applications to the European Court of Human Rights shows that the objective has not yet been reached. For the purposes of modernisation, the issue raised in paragraph 29 also seems fundamental. The government must (is called upon to) take all the necessary measures to increase the social inclusion of women and their competitiveness in the labour market, especially through policies aiming to diminish the gender gap specifically in secondary education. It is even more important to mention here that Turkey’s military occupation of the northern part of the island of Cyprus without any legitimate claim has been in place ever since 1974."@en1
