"I welcome the idea of a European Endowment for Democracy, introduced into the more general EU debate on the review of the EU’s policies and actions promoting democracy, following the events in the southern Mediterranean. The intention is, in fact, to create a semi-autonomous entity which could support democracy activists and democratic developments around the world in an unbureaucratic way and which would not be directly associated with EU diplomacy or the European Commission. I hope that Parliament will be involved in the setting up, governance structure and the scrutiny of this possible European fund."@en1
