"In May 2011, following analysis of the events in the southern Mediterranean, the EU High Representative and Commission Vice-President, Lady Ashton, along with Commissioner Füle, put forward the idea of a European Endowment for Democracy (EED). The EED is intended to be a semi-autonomous entity which could support democracy activists and democratic developments around the world, paying particular attention to women’s participation in the democratic reform process. The EED will be further evidence that the European Parliament stands shoulder-to-shoulder with those fighting for democratic change, and for the promotion of equal rights for men and women in every country of the world. I voted for this motion for a resolution for the above reasons."@en1
