"There can be no talk of progress in dialogue between the EU and Belarus if Minsk does not make progress in the area of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, nor until it grants the unconditional release of all political prisoners. The worsening situation in the field of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Belarus must change. Unfortunately, despite our geographical closeness, the European Union and Belarus are separated in many areas by a gulf of political and social standards. The persecution of human rights defenders and members of the democratic opposition and the politically motivated harassment of civil society activists and independent media in Belarus show us that cooperation is impossible, despite our most sincere desire to achieve this. How can we cooperate with someone who simply does not want that cooperation?
Today’s resolution is a democratic and peaceful means of expressing our opinion, because it is very important to stress clearly our disapproval of all actions which strike at fundamental freedoms. Close cooperation of the European Union’s 27 Member States and third countries is a solid basis for promoting these values, and our efforts can enable us to achieve the objective of beginning the democratic process in Belarus."@en1
