"Madam President, I appreciate the work of the Committee on Petitions and I believe in the right of citizens to petition Parliament. Nevertheless, this report is a mess. It reads like a hastily compiled shopping list scribbled down on the back of an envelope. I am pleased that the report deals with the unacceptable Spanish coastal law. I hear regularly from my constituents who have been left homeless and penniless with no compensation. Yet the report also notes that property law does not fall within the EU’s area of competence.
The UK was not afforded the same courtesy when the report criticised our social security system, another area which clearly lies outside EU competence. I cannot support a report which wants the UK to ban the right-to-reside test on EU nationals before they take advantage of the generous British welfare system. We have a right to protect our taxpayers from the burden of benefit tourism."@en1
