"Madam President, I have a problem, or rather two problems, with Turkey. Turkey’s membership of the European Union does not present me with any difficulties. This is on condition, however, that a solution is found to a problem which is, for me, an egregious violation of European solidarity: how can we propose membership of the European Union to Turkey in a situation in which Turkey supports the occupation of the sovereign territory of Cyprus – one of the European Union’s Member States? In addition to this, Turkey is still having huge problems with implementing the rights of national and religious minorities. On the one hand, we have the huge Kurdish issue, while, on the other, there are still instances of the persecution of Christians in Turkey. Without resolution of the two problems to which I have referred – the problem of the occupation of Cyprus and the problem of national and religious minorities – there can be no talk of European Union membership for Turkey."@en1
