"Madam President, we sometimes feel a little helpless when talking about Belarus because after all, this House has already seen a great many resolutions on the subject. However, we must not close our eyes to the fact that the situation there, instead of getting better, is getting worse. Worst of all, many opposition political activists have been cut off from contact with Europe and the world. They have been told they cannot leave the country, and many of those who would like to modernise and change the country have been put in prison. On the other hand, the recent executions already referred to by Mr Kamiński arouse our worst fears as to the direction in which Belarus is moving, for while it is difficult to accept executions, it is much more difficult to accept a lack of respect for the minimum standard of decency and the right of the family to bury the body of a loved one, even if it was someone who had been sentenced to death. It is the duty of the European Parliament to call for the release of all political prisoners and for greater democracy, even if we are sometimes in doubt as to whether the calls we make are effective."@en1
