"I support Parliament’s resolution in response to the EIB’s 2010 annual report. The EIB is one of the most important EU institutions for supporting the real economy and it must play a leading role in getting the European economy growing and creating jobs again. In 2010, the EIB provided support to more than 100 000 SMEs across the EU. This is very welcome but we have to remember that there are 23 million SMEs in the EU, accounting for 98% of all enterprises and a huge number of jobs. I therefore very much welcome the resolution’s call for greater support to be provided for SMEs. I also look forward to the responses to the January European Council call for stronger EIB support for SMEs and infrastructure. In all of this, we have to ensure that EIB support for SMEs actually goes to the SMEs and does not remain with the banks. I also welcome the clear support in the resolution for the Europe 2020 project bond initiative to support major European infrastructure projects, as launched in a pilot phase by the Commission last October."@en1
