"The Europe 2020 strategy quite rightly states that one of the Union’s development priorities is a reduction in the number of people living in poverty and social exclusion. The aim is for the number of people at risk of poverty to fall by 20 million by 2020. In this context, I believe that it is important to continue food distribution, financed from EU funds, to needy people in the European Union. At present, EUR 500 million is spent on this scheme from the EU budget each year, and 18 million people benefit from this aid. Polish citizens are key beneficiaries of this scheme, since four million people receive assistance in the form of free food products, including staples such as grains, flour and tinned foods. Over 20 000 volunteers and many non-governmental organisations are involved in programmes to help the poor in Poland. It should be noted that implementation of the EU programme does not just provide tangible support for many poor people but is also important for agricultural producers, for farmers’ incomes and for agri-food processing companies. All of this argues in favour of the EU continuing this programme and funding it from its budget."@en1
