"Combating poverty is an important objective of European policy during this decade. The European Union has undertaken to reduce poverty levels significantly by 2020, by coordinating current policies more effectively and by setting concrete goals. Alongside a series of other measures, the EU ‘Food for Free’ programme has become an important tool for overcoming poverty. In an area which actually comes under the authority of the Member States, it has been possible to help people who would otherwise have gone hungry by using resources from the agriculture industry. This important assistance, which directly benefits those affected and which has therefore also been able to convince a large number of people of the importance of the European project, is now likely to come to an end, as a result of disputes about responsibility and the opposition of some Member States. This will not only result in a serious reduction in the amount of food available to those sections of the population which are at risk of poverty and exclusion, but also to a further loss of credibility in the progress being made in Europe. We must therefore call on the Commission to find appropriate ways of continuing this programme."@en1
