"The programme to distribute food to the most deprived persons in the EU is currently helping about 18 million European citizens from 20 Member States in total. As I was recently able to see in practice in my own country, this aid is working in its current form, and is working effectively. It is also estimated that a further 43 million Europeans may face food shortages in the near future. I see no reason, therefore, why this food aid should be terminated now, when we are also facing major social problems. I therefore fully support the continuation of this programme. If this programme continues within the European Social Fund, it will not be a case of the solidarity of the poor with the poor. We should also think about the circumstances and causes of poverty in general, and focus on its prevention."@en1
