"I would like to welcome the Commission’s desire to get involved in tackling poverty, based both on the large percentage it is undertaking to propose for the European Social Fund (ESF) and the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF), and on the good will it is showing by identifying solutions for continuing with the food aid programmes. However, a distinction needs to be made between the two groups. The intention behind the ESF and EGF is obviously to provide long-term solutions. On the other hand, food aid programmes address the needs for immediate intervention and are targeted at the most vulnerable groups of European citizens. On behalf of the 17 000 families who receive such aid in the county which I represent in the European Parliament, I call on Parliament, the Council and Commission to enable the programme to continue after 2013 as well."@en1
