"Food aid to the most deprived citizens is a successful EU programme. Every year, it distributes thousands of tonnes of basic foodstuffs, such as flour and sugar, among those in need. What is more, these measures also ensure that consumers receive high-quality, safe products, produced locally by European farmers. Yet the future of the programme is in jeopardy, as some Member States intend to make cuts in the EU budget and, to that end, wish to terminate food aid. We find this unacceptable. Due to the protracted economic crisis, there is an increasingly strong necessity to support European citizens in need. This is why I welcome the European Commission’s intention to maintain this measure in the new budgetary period starting in 2014."@en1
