"Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, we have to look at the source and cause of this problem. It is the current neoliberal economic model that many Member States are applying, with strategies based on budgetary adjustments but with a lack of active policies to generate growth and employment, which, coupled with the imbalance between the public and private sectors, has led to many of our citizens, who are not responsible for the crisis, falling into a vortex of hunger, poverty and social exclusion.
The figures are not optimistic given that over 113 million European citizens are at risk of falling into poverty or becoming socially excluded.
Solidarity and cohesion, basic European principles, show the need for these policies to be corrected through the regulation of economic relationships to avoid the widening of social differences and to put an end to the imbalances.
The Union has to be there for its citizens, for those citizens who are suffering the most, with effective responses to exit this crisis. That is the only way the European institutions will recover their lost prestige. This enforces the need, therefore, to maintain this food distribution programme."@en1
