"Madam President, Bahrain is not the worst country in the world, nor is it the poorest, nor is it the most undemocratic, nor is it the most backward. Nevertheless, the issues we are discussing here today are of the gravest import and we would hope that as a result of our resolution pressure might be brought to bear on the Bahraini authorities so they make the necessary reforms. The establishment of the Bahraini Independent Commission of Inquiry is welcome but, unless it is seen to have implementation measures which will bring concrete results, it will not be of any value, especially in bringing people who have been guilty of human rights violations to justice. Also Bahrain needs to establish the right for peaceful protests. Those who have been arrested for engaging in peaceful protests must be freed; in particular those who have lost their jobs because of being involved in peaceful protests must have their jobs given back. Finally, the First World itself must desist from selling military equipment to Bahrain until these measures are implemented. If this is done, we will have made progress. Thank you."@en1
