"Madam President, inspired by last year’s successful protests in Egypt and Tunisia, the people of Bahrain also took to the streets en masse, starting a wave of anti-government protests, demanding the introduction of a constitutional monarchy and an end to discrimination against Shiites. Following a brutal attack by the police and security forces on the demonstrators on 17 February, 60 people were killed and over 3 000 arrested. The Bahraini authorities are continuing their repression against society, censoring the media, restricting Internet access and also placing restrictions on the universal right of assembly and association and even on free movement of citizens and humanitarian aid.
In the light of the continuing repression, we demand an immediate cessation of acts of violence and call on the Bahraini authorities to restore fundamental freedoms and civil liberties. Only a constructive dialogue with society can help to produce a solution that will make it possible to end the state of emergency in the country."@en1
