"In recent months, the situation in Nigeria has deteriorated dramatically: in last week’s news we heard of the murder of two European civilian hostages, including Italian Franco Lamolinara, after they had been kidnapped by the terrorist Islamic group Boko Haram. This is unfortunately only the latest in a long series of violent acts perpetrated by this sect, which includes the profoundly significant attacks which they organised on Christmas Day last year against various Christian churches, in which dozens of people were killed. I had already expressed my concern about the situation in Nigeria earlier this year, in a question to High Representative Baroness Ashton, who assured me that the EU would take suitable action. I do not think this has yet happened, but we hope that this joint resolution, which I supported, may be helpful in trying to bring the necessary stability to Nigeria."@en1
