"The freedoms of religion, belief, conscience and thought are fundamental and universal values and are essential elements of democracy. The EU has repeatedly expressed its commitment to defend the freedoms of religion, belief, conscience and thought, and has stressed that governments have a duty to guarantee these freedoms all over the world. I firmly believe that all the forms of violence in Nigeria are reprehensible, and that the threat of continuing ethnic, religious and political tension is also a cause for concern, leading to further suffering for thousands of people. It is essential for the Nigerian government to find a way to end the violence as quickly as possible, and to ensure the safety and protection of the Nigerian people, as well as respect for human rights. The President should also make the necessary effort and encourage dialogue between representatives of different religions and beliefs, and in this way strengthen freedom of thought, conscience and religion. The country’s leading figures should make an effort to fight poverty and inequality, and to promote social, political and economic reforms with the aim of building a democratic, stable and free state which respects human rights."@en1
