"I would congratulate the Commission on the ‘Roadmap for moving to a competitive low-carbon economy in 2050’ that it has presented. Despite requiring major investment in sectors such as technology and green transport, infrastructure such as smart electricity grids and environmental protection, this programme is set to be an asset in the long term. It is our responsibility to show leadership by reducing CO
emissions, even if our actions alone are not enough to halt the process of global warming. We should therefore aspire for Europe to have cutting-edge, high-tech industry, with highly skilled professionals creating the products that we need, using fewer resources and emitting less CO
in the process. Finally, it should be noted that there is a need to revise the emissions trading system, so that prices recover to the levels set out when the legislation was adopted, and in order to avoid so-called ‘carbon leakage’ or the possibility that some companies may leave Europe in order to avoid higher costs resulting from the measures taken to reduce CO
emissions."@en1
