"Mr President, this Chamber is obsessed with declamatory votes, with legislation and resolutions designed to show what very civilised and humane people we are, rather than to effect any outcome in the real world. The worse the crisis becomes outside, the more we engage in this displacement activity. Greece is in default, the crisis is spreading across the Mediterranean and we are obsessing about a website in the Netherlands. And we are not even condemning the authors of the website, although we have given those boneheads far more publicity than they could have dreamed of. We are not even condemning the party associated with it. We are condemning an unrelated party of the Dutch Prime Minister. Well, I think he might very reasonably protest but, if he were to spend every moment responding to things in other parties with which he disagrees, he would be up dawn till dusk doing that and he has actually got a country to run. But of course the real reason this is happening is a sort of tit for tat because one group is condemned, therefore another one has to move a resolution. You know what? Instead of escalating, we would gain far more credibility and respect if we dropped this kind of self-indulgent and self-righteous resolution and we concentrated on the issues that actually have effects on the real world."@en1
