"Mr President, the world’s population has already passed the seven-billion mark and the amount of food required is likely to increase by 70% by 2050. This rise in the demand for food is likely to mean a 19% increase in the amount of water used in the agricultural sector, which already accounts for 70% of the water consumed globally.
The motion for a resolution currently being debated quite rightly notes that the latest technological advances would help increase efficiency in the water sector, and encourages the use in agriculture of new technologies, equipment and tools associated with the use of water. I would like to highlight in this regard the benefits which would be derived from using transgenic plants more widely, which are also more cost-effective and can help farmers care for the environment, including through saving water."@en1
