"Madam President, in recent years, several Romanian sailors have been captured by Somali pirates. Last October, three of them were fortunately released after eight months of captivity. Piracy should be tackled by the EU in terms of both its causes and impact on security in the region.
Europe needs to change its strategy on Somalia’s political and economic construction by cooperating with the African Union. Efforts must be accompanied by an efficient distribution of humanitarian aid. In parallel, efforts to combat attacks by sea must be centralised. Thus, parallel missions of the EU, China and the US are currently taking place in the coastal area. The military protection of the international transit corridor in the Gulf of Aden should also be prioritised within such a structure."@en1
