"Madam President, although, at the Eastern Partnership summit in Prague, this country committed to respect human rights, it is becoming increasingly disreputable. I think Belarus is the closest country to the European Union and the furthest away from European values. I would like to point out that sanctions should also be applied within the Eastern Partnership. We need to enter into discussions with members of this partnership, especially with neighbouring countries, in order to put pressure on the regime in Minsk to change its attitude, to the extent that somebody like Lukashenko is capable of doing. However, I have serious doubts about Lukashenko’s willingness to change his behaviour.
Why should we not cooperate with Russia as well in this endeavour? For Russia would have an opportunity to show its commitment to values that are human, perennial and not specific only to the European Union, as Russia, too, adheres to international documents, and I mean, in particular, UN documents."@en1
