"Mr President, an initial conclusion of the demonstrations and elections in Russia is that Russian civil society has become stronger and may be able to generate an alternative to the current regime. I think that pragmatism should prevail in the EU’s relations with the Kremlin administration, but this should not imply a waiver of our political and moral values. Russia should be aware that our position on the respect of human rights and democratic and transparent government is not negotiable.
The European Union should also make it clear to Moscow that its position on regimes such as the one in Syria is not in favour of peoples suffering because of totalitarian governments. I think it is important for the new administration to condemn what is happening in Syria, particularly within the United Nations. On the other hand, it would be desirable for the European Union and Member States to speak the same language when it comes to key dimensions of relations with the Russian Federation, such as energy policies."@en1
