"I supported Mr Howitt’s motion for a resolution because I agree with the approach it takes. I am in favour of the implementation of the Commission’s reform proposals. The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia has made significant progress, but considerable efforts are still needed to combat corruption, ensure the independence of the judiciary and reform the public administration. Although inter-ethnic violence ended after the Ohrid Framework Agreement, the country’s political balance remains fragile. It is therefore essential, in my view, to remain cautious with regard to the progress of the negotiations. I agree with the Commission, which, in its report, calls for a return to political dialogue in order to ensure that the reforms are implemented within a reasonable timeframe. As regards the dispute over the name, I believe that the UN could certainly act as intermediary in this matter."@en1
