"Diabetes is the most common non-communicable disease, affecting more than 32 million people in the European Union, representing nearly 10% of the total EU population. Particularly worrying, in the case of Portugal, is the increase in the incidence of the illness among children and young people. Type 2 diabetes decreases life expectancy by five to 10 years, while Type 1 diabetes decreases life expectancy by around 20 years. Overall, 325 000 deaths per year are attributed to diabetes in the EU. People living with diabetes must provide 95% of their own care, which has psycho-social consequences and an impact on the quality of life of their families. The reduction of risk factors, notably lifestyle habits, is increasingly crucial to reducing diabetes rates. I am voting for this motion for a resolution, because I believe the measures therein will make a positive contribution to diabetes prevention and the reduction of the incidence of the disease among the public."@en1
