"Since the European Parliament carries weight in the negotiations on the new International Cocoa Agreement thanks to the status of the EU as the largest importer of cocoa and one of the main partners in the agreement, under no circumstances must we allow minors to participate in work in the agriculture sector, including the cultivation of cocoa. It is physically dangerous work for children in an environment and under conditions that are totally unsuitable, when they should be going to school. Forced labour, slavery and human trafficking cannot be forgiven under any circumstances.
I therefore support the rapporteur and congratulate him on this marvellous initiative in which our consent to the international agreement would be conditional upon the ending of child labour in this sector. It is also necessary to view this issue from a broader perspective and to seek ways of monitoring the child labour situation worldwide. I therefore urge the Commission to take up this initiative."@en1
