"I voted in favour of the European Parliament consent to the International Cocoa Agreement 2010 because it defines improvements to the social and market sustainability of the cocoa production industry, establishing a fair balance between prices for consumers and producers. The European Union is one of the main importers of cocoa beans: therefore, we both have the need and the responsibility to get involved in the multilateral process of international market regulation. I very positively welcomed the decision to link the adoption of the agreement to a resolution and a Commission statement on child labour in the cocoa sector: the issue certainly merits separate treatment, given its crucial relevance in the field of children’s rights. We urgently must take the direction of a total ban on child labour in trade."@en1
