"The existence of a single market with freedom of movement for persons and goods, with unquestionable benefits for European citizens, at times also enables the existence of criminal organisations, corruption and/or money laundering. In view of this situation, on 25 October 2011, Parliament adopted a resolution on organised crime in the EU, in which it expressed its intention to set up a special committee on organised crime, corruption and money laundering. On 16 February 2012, the Conference of Presidents adopted the decision to set up a special committee, having set out its powers and numerical composition. Since this concerns the creation of a body which facilitates the full functioning of the rule of law throughout the EU, from which European citizens only stand to gain, I voted for this special committee. Its aims are to analyse and evaluate the extent of organised crime, corruption and money laundering and their impact on the Union and its Member States, and to propose appropriate measures to enable the Union to forestall and counter these threats at national, international and European level."@en1
