"I have, on several occasions, highlighted the fact that the preparation of the EU budget is, on the one hand, an excellent opportunity to genuinely solve the problems tormenting Europe – unemployment and the economic downturn. On the other hand, it is an opportunity to demonstrate that austerity measures need to begin at home. I therefore welcome the provision that next year’s EU budget must focus on combating the crisis, boosting the creation of new jobs (particularly for young people), scientific and technological progress and the efficient use of resources, but should, at the same time, also focus on increasing the efficiency of the administrative apparatus and reducing costs."@en1
