"I decided to vote in favour of this report regulating high-quality beef imports. Let us not forget, the dispute on beef hormones negatively affected transatlantic trade relations in agricultural products for more than two decades. In 1988, the EU banned imports of beef and beef products from animals treated with certain growth-promoting hormones for reasons of consumer protection and food safety. In 1996, the United States and Canada challenged the ban through the WTO dispute settlement system and were subsequently authorised to impose trade sanctions on agricultural products imported from the EU. Since 1999, the US and Canada have imposed retaliatory duties on a wide range of European products. This proposal sets out memoranda that I consider to be decisive and which will be implemented in several phases in order to meet US and Canadian criteria. There will certainly be a limited impact on the European market, but a failure to adopt this regulation would run the risk of new trade sanctions against our Union."@en1
