"Mr President, it was to be expected that a large majority would be in favour of this short article today as everyone wants to cure this disease or, better still, to prevent it.
As regards prevention, I came across a staggering statistic recently at a health forum in Brussels, where it said that 97% of health expenses in the European Union were spent on trying to treat various ailments and only 3% was invested in trying to find cures and, particularly, on prevention.
Therefore, I agree completely with Kay Swinburne, who says that in research, there should be huge emphasis on prevention. There is too much on trying to find cures and not enough on prevention. For instance, many people would like to change their behavioural pattern and to have a better lifestyle but they struggle to do so. That is an example of where we should do some research. Also Ms Băsescu mentioned the importance of sport. I certainly agree with that, and particularly in the next multiannual financial framework, there should be a budget for health-related sport and various activities."@en1
