"Mr President, I voted in favour of this report. It is very important that we try to do all we can at EU level to prevent the growth in the number of diabetes cases. As has been said, diabetes is now an epidemic of sorts, and the number of cases has increased dramatically, especially those relating to Type 2 diabetes, which is very largely the consequence of changes in lifestyle and the role that diet and exercise play in people’s health.
While health care issues mainly fall within the competence of the Member States under the principle of subsidiarity, in my view, it is nevertheless a good thing that people are being made aware of these matters of public health and this risk at EU level. It is also good that an attempt is being made to encourage Member States to act to ensure that children and young people are told about the effects of healthy eating and healthy lifestyle while still at school, and that everything possible is being done to try to prevent any further increase in cases of Type 2 diabetes and to bring it under control."@en1
