"Mr President, recent figures show that 2.9 million people in the United Kingdom have been diagnosed with diabetes. This figure includes those diagnosed in my own constituency of Northern Ireland with an estimated 73 500 people currently living with this illness. There are thought to be thousands more who have the condition but do not yet know it.
Diabetes is on the increase in Northern Ireland, as it is across Europe. Over the last six years, the number of people in my own constituency diagnosed with this condition has increased by almost 41%. A recent report entitled ‘Diabetes in the National Health Service’ estimated a total cost of GBP 3.5 billion per annum. That is over GBP 9.6 million per day to treat this illness.
With 100 000 people in the UK diagnosed every year, health costs are spiralling and placing an increased strain on government resources. It is therefore vital that we become more proactive in combating this condition through education and increased awareness, with an emphasis on healthy diet and exercise as a means of prevention."@en1
