"Mr President, I think that it is very important now to ensure that the European Union adheres to its values. Central to these is the matter of human rights and also the rights of children associated with them. Consequently, we must be very careful not to expose children to dangers of this kind in any circumstances. Instead, we should ensure that they continue to develop holistically and that we consider their physical, motor, cognitive and intellectual development, and do everything possible to bring that about.
That being the case, we must dissociate ourselves very determinedly and clearly from the use of child labour, and when we conclude agreements on cocoa and other commodities, we also need to ensure that our partners do not expose children to such dangers to save costs. Children must have the right to a childhood and children’s rights, which are human rights."@en1
