"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I hope we will make a great step today towards resolving a conflict which began as far back as 1988. As a result of this conflict, European exporters are losing around USD 116 million every year because of import bans on European products in the US market imposed by the United States as a reprisal for bans introduced by the European Union.
In principle, I am a supporter of free trade, but I also think that just as the United States should have confidence in the plant health procedures in force in Europe, we too should have confidence in food safety procedures in the United States. So it seems that what we have done today is a step in a very good direction. I hope that the United States will respond positively to this gesture of goodwill on the part of the European Union."@en1
