"Mr President, Europe’s fisheries sector is going through a tough time at the moment, and if we also refer to the fishing sector in countries with economic austerity programmes, then the situation is even more dramatic. For that reason, I would like to congratulate the Commission because through the increase in cofinance for the European Fisheries Fund programmes, we are helping different countries, such as Greece, Ireland and Portugal, to have more liquidity and to continue to run the cohesion programmes that will aid their economic recovery through job creation and the growth stimulation. The retroactive nature of the measures, from 1 January 2012, will help with that, and we hope that its application through to 31 December 2013 will be enough, because that will mean Europe is emerging from this depression. I think that with this decision, the European institutions will be demonstrating that they are up to the task. I hope, therefore, as the rapporteur stated, that this will be approved at first reading."@en1
