"Mr President, as a crop that is grown on more than 8 million hectares of tropical land in forty countries, cocoa brings gains to the countries that cultivate, process and consume it. This is, above all, a sector on which the livelihoods of 50 million people around the world depend. I therefore consider it essential to adopt a transparent legal framework to ensure much more equitable conditions in the global chain – from producers, through intermediaries and exporters, to end users. Sustainable world trade in cocoa must be based at all stages of the chain on the principles of economic viability, and on respect for social and environmental standards.
For this reason, I firmly believe that a fair price for cocoa and the related fair revenues in particular for producers, who are often small farmers in developing countries, will help to resolve problems as well as issues relating to the unfair exploitation of child labour in this sector."@en1
