"Mr President, like others, I, of course, support the International Cocoa Agreement. I think that it will help in terms of the social and environmental stability of the cocoa industry, but I also express grave concern at the existence of child labour in the industry. Let us be clear, though: the responsibility for tackling this issue does not lie with the European Parliament or with consumers in Europe, but with the industry itself. Over the last 10 years, the industry has made EUR 700 billion. That is a phenomenal sum of money, and the industry spent precisely 0.0075% of that investing in its workers’ working conditions.
The industry has a responsibility to provide schools for the children that it exploits. It has a responsibility to improve factories and conditions to make sure that the health of workers is protected. As I said, I welcome this agreement, but, in the end, the best way forward is for us to continue to buy and support Fair Trade products."@en1
