Transport is of paramount importance to the economy and European society but, unfortunately, the task of improving the transport infrastructure is a real challenge, especially for the new Member States. Given that by 2050, the volume of freight traffic will rise by more than 80% and that of passenger traffic by more than 50%, to what extent does the Commission consider that EU support, in the form of the Structural Funds and the Connecting Europe Facility, will be sufficient to tackle the future challenges?
