"I probably cannot answer the last part of the question on studies but, of course, we can always discuss how to develop and examine regional cooperation and some regional projects. This can be a matter of concrete discussion, but with regard to State aid to airlines – State aid is in the hands of our competition authorities. The Commission is always responsible for ensuring that competition is fair. There are certain State aid possibilities for regional airports, for instance, and in order to facilitate and support regional economies, but the Commission can never accept that obsolete companies, which cannot survive, be sustained through the use of taxpayers’ money. This creates unfair competition and others will ask for the same and then everything will come from taxpayers’ money. This is a basic principle concerning concrete cases. Concrete cases are always under very careful examination. It takes a long time but, if the Commission finds that the rules are violated and the situation is not fair, then these kinds of practices must be finished."@en1
