"I can answer very briefly. As you know, the annual growth survey for 2012 highlighted the importance of addressing the social consequences of the crisis, and many recent initiatives, including, for example, the Youth Opportunities Initiative, underline the importance of the European Social Fund in addressing these issues and intervening where it can. That is why a few minutes ago, when the discussion was about Greece, I also underlined the importance of, for example, the ESF in supporting the continued provision of social services so as to prevent the recession from causing even greater damage. We are working with the Member States, especially those most severely affected, to find new solutions. These new solutions very often have to be cost-effective and budget-neutral, because we also have to ensure that fiscal consolidation goes ahead. Consequently the Commission’s services and the exchange of experience between Member States are very helpful for those who have to make progress in terms of social investment and in finding new ways to address social needs."@en1
