"Mr President, I just want to say that of course we understand what Mr Papanikolaou has just said about the demands and the severity of this national programme, as recommended by the Troika, and the difficulty involved in implementing it. As far as Greece is concerned, we are dealing with an exceptional situation that has justified exceptional measures. At the same time, the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund have played their part, as have the Greek authorities, by agreeing together to extremely tough measures.
I would like to add this question, Mr Papanikolaou, to the debate that we are going to have during this Question Time on the issue of growth and competitiveness. Exceptional measures have had to be taken to get out of an exceptionally serious situation and that requires the efforts of everyone, in particular, the Greek people. I am confident that your country has real assets, with its tourism economy, which is one of the most powerful in Europe thanks to its natural, cultural and historical heritage, its extremely powerful maritime economy and its extremely important agricultural capacity. Therefore – and we will talk about this shortly – although the internal market, which is the open area for the Greek economy, functions well, I think that your country must play its part and fulfil its role in that internal market, rediscovering there the foundations for reviving its growth and its job market. That is why the Greek case, like that of other countries, is linked to what we must do to relaunch growth, employment and competitiveness within the internal market."@en1
